Recently I discovered Snatam Kaur’s rendition of Ray Man Shabad. 15 minutes of conscious changing music. The halfway point captures a feeling of love to pure consciousness and enlightenment. It’s floored me. Further research showed me this beautiful mantra and powerful words.

“The Ray Man Shabad was written by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, who was a master of yoga, a master of poetry, a master warrior, and a master of the Shabad Guru.”

Notes from this post.

Ong Kundalini Yoga Mantra

Bound Lotus Kriya

Snatam Kaur

Ray man eh bidh jog kamaa-o
Singee saach akapat kanthalaa
Dhi-aan Bibhoot charaa-o
Taatee geho aatam bas kar kee
Bhicchhaa naam adhaarang
Baajay param taar tat har ko
Upajai raag rasaarang
Ughatai taan tarang rang
Gi-aan geet bandhaanang
Chak chak rehay dayv daanav mun
Chhak chhak bayom bivaanang
Aatam upadays bhays sanjam ko
Jaap so ajapaa jaapa
Kaal na kabahoo bayaapai

Translation

Oh my mind, practice Yoga in this way: Let Truth be your horn, sincerity your necklace, and meditation the ashes you apply on your body.

Catch your burning soul (self) and stop the flames. Let the soul (self) be the alms bowl in which you collect the sweet Naam and this will be the only support you will ever need.
The Universe plays its divine music. The sound of reality is shrill, but this is where God is.

When you listen to the reality from this place of awareness the sweet essence of Raag arises. Waves of melodies, emotions, and passions arise and flow through you. Bind yourself with the song of God.

The Universe spins like a potter’s wheel and from it fly demons and angels. The sage listens to this and instead of getting caught in either one, the sage drinks the nectar of the heavens and is carried to the heavens in a divine chariot.

Instruct and clothe yourself with self control. Meditate unto infinity until you are meditating without meditating. In this way, your body shall remain forever golden, and death shall never approach you.

In a few weeks Hart Plaza will be overtaken by an electronic music festival unlike any other in the world. For three days Detroit turns into a vibrant cosmopolitan city with parties all over the place and a lineup packed with talent and diversity. As Huvaere states in this interview, it’s all about the people attending the festival.

I was interested in finding out how Paxahau was able to keep this music festival going. For those of us around town the beginning had some serious growing pains and we almost lost it. I wanted to find how Paxahau had the vision and discipline to keep it alive. I asked Huvaere point-blank about the highs and lows of the festival. Here is how he responded.

As time goes on and mainstream radio creeps in there’s a population that’ll always stay in tune to, what I’ve heard Amy Winehouse refer to as, “what the kids are playing“. Over the past few years it seems like the kids, the airwaves, the corporate sponsors, the record label titans are blasting out Lady Gaga. For those of us raised on Grace Jones, Madonna, Miss Lady Kier along with techno/house sensibilities Lady Gaga makes me smile. A few weeks back I brought myself up to speed on all the videos via Youtube and remarked she’s a lot of fun. She even earned the right to don my headphone halo, make the head bob and there was the side of me that wanted to take part in the delicious simplicity of money, music, and some kinkiness. It’s easy good stuff and have fun with it. It’s refreshing to see a strong individual pushing the convential boundaries of art.

At the same time another woman has come into my life. One that’s not going to be pushed by any titans, nor have videos, or deal with content with the simple goal of selling records. She’s Snatam Kaur and I discovered her via last.fm. This track called Ong Namo kept coming up in my playlist. You see….. money, music, movies, the bombardment, thrown in with kinkiness internally and externally manufactured, can make a mess out of a person. One turns to yoga, prayer and the spiritual arts and can be blessed with having things come across one’s computer screen. Such is Snatam Kaur. You can read up on her on the website or Wikipedia but I offer her up as a suggestion and a observation. For decades we’ve lived in a world where graceful and righteous women like Snatam Kaur were pushed off to the fringes left to folk festivals and obscurity. And to some extent she still may be in these worlds but technology gives her a chance to disseminate her prayers of music globally and I sense there’s people listening. Her voice is that of an angel and it cleanses. Take a deep breath and come off the crack we’re constantly hit with.

Suniai = To listen to the music of feeling karma being born.

In my dealings with Jason Huvaere I have been very impressed with his matter-of-factness and professionalism. This series of interviews conveys this. It is this professionalism combined with a sense of responsibility and urgency that brought Paxahau into the Movement Festival. I was very interested how he would respond to a question about the misconceptions of Detroit. His response made me proud and shows a glimmer of the Detroit soul one gets or sees only after having been here a very long time. I love the phrase “a state of mind that everyone here has a responsibility to keep working towards.”
They are prolific promoters and archivers of the events they have so passionately put on since 1993. Their recent claim to fame is being the organizers behind The Detroit Electronic Music Festival, or Movement as it is now called.

In this first podcast we interviewed the founder and main force behind Paxahau, Jason Huvaere. Like so many in Detroit, he is behind the scenes and gets shit done, makes it happen. Detroit’s electronic music is legendary and mythic and Paxahau has been there all long, stealthily and below the surface, disseminating the music to the dance floors and airwaves via their itunes podcast. Part 1 finds out the origins of the Paxahau name and how it fits within the cultural context of Detroit.

things sometimes get desperate. there is a feeling of anxiety that grips the inside of a small heart and greets the surface of the face of such a man.

all the constructs of modern life, or even “life” (modern or ancient); romantic relationships, work, study, all conspire to plan a blitzrieg attack on fragile emotional ramparts… living can be hard sometimes. However, there is comfort in knowing that for a lucky few of us, life is no longer harsh; harsh cold winters, harsh hunger, or a harsh poverty lived out in a garbage dump site. In this knowledge there is perspective, and innumerable blessings to be appreciated

whenever i feel the hardness of the moment, as strongly as the worries of a past due bill or as sublimely as a soft pillow, soft but not like a previous lover… i am usually giving away my power to a fear of some uncertain future. because i live my life in the moment of the future and not the moment of the present, i suffer.

lol… to think that all this is a prologue to a short poem.

in the words of a10, remember to dance for joy (couldn’t have said it any better)

poem: mother-song (text coming later. look out for the videos, also coming soon.)

A few years ago I ran into TakePillsDie.org. Andrew Cauthen’s music is loaded with experiments in drones, beats and ambients. Total driving music to get lost in. It will transport you a la Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada. He floored me in his prolific stature, it is overwhelming. I became inspired just as much by his practice and methods as his aural works. He has a whole world of links and knowledge buried in that site. Check it out. Be warned. He has come full circle in his methodology which is statement and brilliance enough. Before he had absolutely no advertising on his site. Now there is a little bit of porn advertising on there, though most of it is from suicide girls.

I digress- the point of this post is deepindub.org. This is another netlabel which describes this movement in music right now.
According to Wikipedia a netlabel is-

A netlabel(also online label, web label or MP3 label)is a record label that distributes its music primarily through digital audio formats (mainly MP3 or Ogg Vorbis) over the Internet. While similar to traditional record labels in many respects, netlabels typically emphasize free distribution online, often under licenses that encourage works to be shared (e.g., Creative Commons licenses), and artists usually retain copyright. Most employ guerrilla marketingto promote their work; few netlabels earn money for participants.

Deepindub.org is my world right now. My ipod is maxed out. I have hours and hours of music to listen to. This is Basic Channel type stuff. Dubby future. Night time snow driving desolation to let go to. Big up to this crew from Italy. The world comes together in this transition.

I also love the lo fi computer animations. so random. so pure. so raw. so corny. so sexy. so punk.

This past week I was speaking with a colleague in the accounting field. We both commented how there is so much information and news out there especially to us who have ditched the nostalgia of printed newspapers. Times are tough. Knowledge is power. Some resort to prescription pills to make them more clairvoyant, stay up longer and retain more. We’re junkies.

Here’s a speed reading drug for you. Absorb it all in. ZapReader. Hit on the reader, copy and paste text in and select your desired words per minute from 100 all the way upto 500. The words flash one by one, one after the other. For lengthy articles I want to read I’ve started using this. I notice I take the information in differently, it’s almost like I’m using a different part of my brain for comprehension. Its more subliminal and seems to go deeper into my subconscious. I imagine news sites will be offering content in this format. How sweet would it be if sites heavy on text content had a little widget where this just popped up and you could read it as such. Or reading this way on your mobile device. It’s coming.

We’re junkies.
