beware of this bird

twitterEvery blog, every social network talks about and uses twitter. I even wrote one of my final MBA papers on its overall strategy. It has taken communication into a new paradigm, possibly into a new form of consciousness. Long have we passed explaining to people who ask “What is it?”. Now we’re a bit pass the crossroads like everything else on the internet that gets sidetracked by money and porn, perhaps a metaphor for our own minds. These phenomena have begun to add to the noise and requires more discretion on our part to fully understand and use this valuable tool.

With that said, if you are new to the twitterverse, be wary of anything that has this bird logo or any variation of its kind. People are trying to manipulate and package your thoughts and simple words into something else, even if it be only finding more followers. In some regards this is so lame, the mad dash for noise and static. Dial in and fine tune who you communicate with. Get intimate. And the number one rule-

Don’t do automatic replies- talk as a human and not with the mask of technology.

help of self

The buzzword of Web 2.0 seems to have been replaced by the term “Social Media”. And the party is what you make it. And it is still just that- media. I’ve been using and contemplating twitter a lot lately. I have transcended the novelty or lunacy one feels when hearing about it or using it for the first time. To those who use it it is:

  • a customized message board
  • a newsfeed
  • a networking tool
  • an educational tool
  • a library and resource center- asking questions on twitter is fascinating

After a few weeks of indepth usage I see how it is a microcosm of our culture. There are those who use it with grace and forward thinking in the spirit of collaboration and there are those who use it to blatantly drive traffic and links to their moneymaking ventures. On this last group subtlelty is lost.

And there are those, mostly in this second group who it’s like middle school promoting themselves for ego and accumulating the most followers. I don’t understand yet what its like to be following thousands of people. What value is there in that? I wonder if someday I will know.

Twittervision

Twitter is out of control. It just celebrated its year anniversary and like so many innovative web 2.0 software apps that come out many (including myself) ask, “what’s the point?” You hear those phrases like microblogging and the web going esp. I just signed up yesterday and I’m on it. As I type and numbers count down my alloted characters left I feel we’ve created some new form of haiku. There’s an inherent poetic in the forced brevity. A lot out there is written about it and as corny as the esp thing is, I feel it, and I do see that this is where newsmedia is going. If you are a reporter or a media institution twitter is the real time.

Today I learned about twittervision and now my head is officially spinning. A world map, either flat or 3d, your preference and the map shifts around to display all the twits going on in the world in real time. All the world’s languages pop up and the randomness is incredible. Humanity’s consciousness is all laid out in front of you. Out of control. Inspiring.
